Where do these numbers come from?
Google's PageSpeed Insights, which loads your page in a real browser on a simulated mid-range phone. We do not time it from our own server — that would measure our network, not your visitors' experience.
What is the difference between the two sets of numbers?
Lab data is one simulated load: reproducible, available for any site, and not what any particular person saw. Field data comes from real Chrome users over 28 days and is the truth — but Google only publishes it for sites with enough traffic, so smaller sites will not have it.
Why is my mobile score so much worse than desktop?
Because the test simulates a mid-range phone on a slower connection, which is what a large share of your visitors actually use. Mobile is also what Google ranks on, so it is the number worth fixing.
The score changed when I ran it again. Is it broken?
No. A single lab run varies with network conditions and what else Google's test machine is doing. Treat it as a range rather than a precise figure, and watch the direction over time.
Does a perfect score mean more customers?
Not on its own. Speed removes a reason to leave; it does not create a reason to buy. It matters most when a slow site is losing people before they see anything — which the field data will show you.
